Mayuto was born in Rio de Janeiro. At the early age of
12 he joined the big band “Rapazes da Alvorada” while he
was in Junior High School. He built his first conga
drums to play with “Samba Show,” a group formed with top
musicians. Without having seen a conga player before, he
played his newly made instrument at the group’s debut
and got a standing ovation. He was 14 when he created a
variety of samba patterns that became established among
other conga players. Besides studying psychology, he
devoted his life to music, performing with the best of
Brazil such as Paulo Moura, Cipo, Chiquinho, Ed Lincoln,
Luiz Carlos Vinhas, Tamba Four, Bossa Sete, RC Sete,
Milton Nascimento, Cauby Peixoto, Maysa, Betania, Elza
Soares, Eliana Pitman, Jorge Benjor, Jair Rodrigues and
Bola Sete among many others.
Mayuto participated in thousands of works with great
artists such as Cannonball Adderley, Stevie Wonder,
Henry Mancini, Hugh Mazekela, Paul Anka, Frank Sinatra,
Sammy Davis Jr., Herbie Hancock, Branford Marsalis,
